About

Greetings!  I’m Amanda Venema, beloved daughter to Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, wife to a talented techy guy, Roman Catholic homeschooling momma to three miracle kiddos, whole foods, natural remedy momma who loves all things crunchy, simple, and beautiful.

I have a knack for overthinking just about everything.

I struggle terribly with anxiety.

I am a strong introvert who loves people and hearing their story, but I may not come out from a quiet room for days following too much people-ing.

I can cook a meal to accommodate nothing short of 547 allergies and have it still taste pretty darn good.  We have auto-immune issues in our family that we have learned to manage through diet and nutrition.  I had a fairly epic health crisis two year ago, and I am still in recovery mode, but God has been teaching me a new norm over the last few years.  It involves the word “No” more than I would care to say: ‘no’ to my favorite foods (Heaven will be full of eggplant parmesan, chocolate cake, and loads of coffee!), ‘no’ to extra commitments, ‘no’ to moving and shaking and getting it all done by wearing a few too many hats.  I'm resting in this quiet season and waiting for God to open up a few more yeses.

I have a degree in Elementary Education and English and have taught in private and public schools here and overseas.  I’ve also homeschooled all of our kids since day one, something I swore I would never do (God is funny like that).  Homeschooling has been an opportunity to redeem my own education.  As an English major, I read a lot of Literature; but my heart wasn’t tuned to embrace these works as I was more concerned about the 4.0 than what the Western Canon had to teach me.  I was introduced to classical education about seven years ago, and it has taught me what it means to be truly educated and fully human.  I love Charlotte Mason and owe her a debt of gratitude for showing me what a truly liberal education looks like in practice.  I’m also a fan girl of David Hicks and profoundly grateful for his work, Norms and Nobility. Together, these extraordinary thinkers and educators have had a profound impact on what our schooling and living looks like day in and day out.

I began blogging in 2011 and have been nothing short of hit or miss ever since.  I took down my old blog two years ago when I was trying not to die (that sounds dramatic...ok, well, it was). I recently took one of those Word of the Year generator quizzes and received the word “bloom” as my word for 2020.  I think it kind of fits.  There was a lot of darkness over the last few years, but I’m starting to see the light again and I’m ready to get back to my passion—writing.

So here we go.  Thanks for coming along.
